How to file a roof insurance claim in Texas

Central Texas and DFW get hammered by hail and wind. If you have storm damage and a current policy, you're usually covered for a full replacement. You just pay your deductible. Here's how to do it right, step by step.

The claim process, step by step

  1. 1

    Get a free inspection first

Before you call your insurer, get a professional roof inspection. Most storm damage, especially hail bruising, isn't visible from the ground. A documented inspection tells you whether you have a claim worth filing.

  2. 2

    Know your policy

Check three things: your deductible (often 1–2% of home value for wind/hail in Texas), whether you have ACV or RCV coverage (depreciated vs. full replacement cost), and your filing deadline.

  3. 3

    File the claim

Call your insurer or file online with the date of the storm and a short description of the damage. You'll get a claim number and an assigned adjuster.

  4. 4

Meet the adjuster with your roofer there

The adjuster inspects and writes a 'scope of loss.' Have your roofer present so every damaged component (shingles, flashing, vents, gutters, decking) gets counted. This is where most homeowners get shortchanged.

  5. 5

    Review the settlement

You'll get an itemized estimate and a first check, usually the ACV (depreciated amount minus your deductible). Make sure the scope matches the real damage before you accept.

  6. 6

    Get the work done

Schedule the replacement. We install to the approved scope and document the completed work with photos and a certificate of completion.

  7. 7

    Collect recoverable depreciation

With RCV coverage, your insurer holds back 'recoverable depreciation' until the work is finished. We submit the final invoice so you receive that second check.

Insurance claim FAQs

Will filing a claim raise my rates?+

A single weather-related claim usually won't. These are 'acts of God,' not your fault, and your whole neighborhood often files after the same storm. Multiple claims in a short window can affect rates, so it's worth confirming you have real, documented damage first.

Can a roofer waive my deductible?+

No. That's insurance fraud in Texas, and it's illegal. Anyone who offers to 'eat' or 'waive' your deductible is a red flag. You're responsible for your deductible; we make sure the rest is handled fairly.

How long do I have to file in Texas?+

Texas generally gives you at least a year from the date of loss, but file promptly. The longer you wait, the harder it is to tie the damage to a specific storm.

Do I have to use the contractor my insurer recommends?+

No. You choose your own roofer. Your insurer's 'preferred' list is optional. Pick a local, insured contractor who will advocate for the full scope of your claim.
